CIF Individuals

NEWPORT BEACH — The Corona del Mar High doubles teams of Melissa Matsuoka and Hailey Hogan, as well as Danielle Kaiden and Paige Polizois, both advanced to the Round of 16 in play Saturday at CdM and Balboa Bay Club Racquet Club.

Estancia junior Ellie Edles and Sage Hill sophomore Julia Blakeley earned first-round wins before bowing out in the second round in singles competition.

Matsuoka and Hogan had a bye in the first round before defeating Newport Harbor seniors Alex McIntosh and Brittany Sowers, 6-0, 6-1, in the second round. In the third round, Matsuoka and Hogan, both sophomores, topped Harvard-Westlake’s Cassidy Horn and Nicole Hung, 6-2, 6-0.

Kaiden and Polizois cruised through the first two rounds, beating Paramount’s Alicia Mangold and Elizabeth Vega, 6-0, 6-0, before topping Gabriele Newman and Kemi Oyewole of the Carson-based California Academy of Math and Science, 6-0, 6-2.

In the third round, Kaiden and Polizois, both juniors, topped the higher-seeded Esperanza team of Cally Matel and Melanie Abella, 6-4, 6-4.

Matsuoka and Hogan, as well as Kaiden and Polizois, will play in the CIF Individuals Round of 16 on Nov. 29 at Seal Beach Tennis Center. The Round of 16 and quarterfinals will be Nov. 29, with the semifinals and championship match on Nov. 30.

Edles, the Orange Coast League champion, defeated Warren’s Jackie Childers, 6-0, 6-0, but then lost to Orange Lutheran’s Kaitlin Christian, 1-6, 1-6.

Blakeley beat El Dorado’s Kathy Kastner, 6-0, 6-0, and then fell to Troy’s Stefanie Villajuan, 2-6, 3-6.
