Surfing Sailors share top spot in league standings

The Newport Harbor High surf team defeated Dana Hills, 93-74, finishing tied for first in the South Coast League with San Clemente, a first since the Sailors joined the league.
Newport Harbor finished 5-1 in league competition. The Sailors won the boys’ and girls’ shortboard competitions as well as the boys’ longboard event. The Dana Hills boys won the bodyboard and girls’ longboard events.
Newport Harbor won the boys’ shortboard, 47-37, by winning three of the four heats. Victor Done, Mark Contreras and Cameron Clark placed first in this event.
Placing second were Canon Call, and Graeme Chesnie and taking third place were Chase Wilson and Jared Cassidy.
Done’s first-place finish was his fifth of the year.
The girls’ shortboard squad ended the year 6-0 in league competition. Placing first and second for the winning team was Kaleigh Gilchrist with an average wave score of 5.3 and Camille Collett. Gilchrist ended the league competition with five first-place finishes.
Andy Delorme’s 6.8 average wave score was tops for the contest as he represented Newport Harbor well, taking first place for the boys’ longboard squad. Robert Guy placed second for the winning team.
Newport Harbor’s Devyn Hartnett placed second in the girls’ longboard event.
Joe Suzuki placed third in the boys’ bodyboard event for the Sailors.
The South Coast League individual tournament will be held Nov. 27 and 28 at Trestles (lowers). The annual contest determines the top individual surfer in each of the five surfing categories. Nonleague competitions begin in December.
