JACKSON, Tenn. — The No. 2-ranked Lions opened the season by knocking off the defending NAIA national champions from Tennessee in the opening round of the round-robin Rotary Classic Thursday at Union University.
Senior Jessica Richter had 22 points, while Marissa Rivera (13), Sarah Boyd (11) and Lindsey Rinke (11) also hit double figures for the Lions.
Lambuth (1-2) won the rebounding battle, 43-31, and shot better than the Lions (43.9% to 36.2%). But Vanguard made seven of 16 three-pointers, including three of three by Richter.
Richter added four steals and three assists and Rivera had a team-high six rebounds.
Vanguard meets No. 8 Freed Hardeman (3-1) tonight at 7.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Anteaters’ starters shot just 23.3% from the field (seven for 30) in the nonconference road game Thursday.
Senior Miranda Forry, freshman Desiree Springs and sophomore Rebecca Maessen had six points apiece to lead the visitors (0-2), for whom senior Stephanie Duda and junior Kelly Cochran each had eight rebounds.
UCI shot 28.1% from the field (18 of 64), while Utah was 37 of 57 for 64.9%.
