Both of the Huntington Beach couples competing in the 12th season of CBS’s “Amazing Race” survived the first elimination round on the season’s premiere Sunday.
The acclaimed reality show puts 11 teams of two in a race around the world.
The last team to complete each leg is eliminated. The winner ultimately wins $1 million.
TK Erwin and Rachel Rosales took third place on the first leg. Nathan Hagstrom and Jennifer Parker narrowly avoided elimination, coming in 10th.
The stepping-off point for the race was the Playboy Mansion in Los Angeles. The first leg took them to Clifden, Ireland, where contestants were required to take a donkey and fill its baskets with peat.
The show airs at 8 p.m. Sundays on CBS.
Hospital adds new tracking system
Huntington Beach Hospital has installed a high-tech patient tracking system, called EDM, for its emergency department. It uses flat-screen monitors to display information for treatment. The system also allows clinicians to put information into patients’ electronic record so it can be referred to on later visits.
“The EDM module is just one more example of Prime Healthcare Services’ quest to lead the industry is delivering efficient, integrated technology that enables providers to treat patients in the safest and most advantageous environment,” said Dr. Prem Reddy, the company’s board chairman in a news release.
Senator awarded for technology love
Speaking of high-tech, State Sen. Tom Harman received a Technology Leader award from the American Electronics Assn., a major national high-tech trade group. He was one of five California legislators to do so, in addition to a sixth who received the California High Tech Legislator of the Year Award.
“All five of these legislators took a stance in support of technology in 2007,” said Roxanne Gould, the group’s senior vice president of California legislative affairs, in a prepared statement. “By supporting us in important technology and business legislation, they showed tremendous leadership for high-tech in California.”
City sponsors free flu shots for seniors
The city’s Senior Services department will provide free flu shots for the elderly as part of an autumn health fair today. Participants will get a chance for health screenings and information, as well as the vaccinations. The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon at Michael E. Rodgers Seniors’ Center, 1706 Orange Ave. For more information, call (714) 536-5486.
Assemblyman named legislator of year
Assemblyman Jim Silva was recently honored by the California Downtown Assn. as its legislator of the year.
The statewide group represents businesses, chambers of commerce, local downtown associations and business districts.
This year Silva sponsored one of its legislative priorities, AB 1208, which eased some restrictions on establishing a business improvement district.
