John Reed McClarty

John Reed McClarty (“Jack”), a 35-year resident of Newport Beach, passed away at Hoag Hospital Wednesday morning, November 7, 2007.

Jack was born November 29, 1933 in Houston, Texas. He graduated from St. Thomas High School in Houston, served in the US Army, then met and married Martha Myers. After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Houston (‘61) with a double major in mathematics and electrical engineering, he received a masters degree in electrical engineering from NYU (‘63). He came to California to join the aerospace industry with Rockwell in 1963 and had a successful career specializing in aviation systems, retiring as an executive at Loral in 1995.

Jack joined the Balboa Yacht Club in 1969, where he and Martha actively sailed with the Lido 14 Fleet, developing friendships that became the core of their social life. After retiring, the McClartys traveled in their RV throughout the United States and parts of Canada. They also made annual trips to Texas to visit family.

Jack is survived by Martha, his wife of 50 years, his daughter Trish, his daughter Melissa, son-in-law Steve Hanle, and grandchildren Jack, Alison, and Thomas.

A service will be held at St. Joachim Church, 1964 Orange Ave., Costa Mesa at 3:30pm on Thursday, November 15. A reception celebrating Jack’s life will follow at the Balboa Yacht Club.
