Championships

IRVINE — The Corona del Mar High boys’ and girls’ teams each won titles at Irvine Park’s three-mile course Friday.

The boys, led by Thomas Dialynas, who finished second in 15 minutes, two seconds, and Richard DeMarco (third in 15:25), edged University, 54-55, to win the league crown. John Leonard (seventh in 15:45), Sebastien Welch (15th in 16:19) and Ricky Valdez (27th in 17:01) also contributed to the championship.

On the girls side, Shelby Buckley (17:11), Allison Damon (17:21) and Laura Bilder (17:48) finished 1-2-3, as the Sea Kings scored 23 points, well better than second-place Irvine with 58.

Melanie Powers (seventh in 18:12) and Marrisa Cummings (10th in 18:23) helped the Sea Kings win, as well.

Kim Condino (14th in 18:40) and Sarah Craig (17th in 18:53) also competed for CdM.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Orange Coast League Finals

LAGUNA BEACH – Estancia High junior Ellie Edles won her first league title after a marathon 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (4) victory over Laguna Beach’s Madeline Jaeger in the championship match Friday at Jaeger’s home court.

Edles finished runner-up as a freshman in the Golden West League, and also second last year in the Orange Coast League. She defeated Laguna Beach’s Haley Moss, 6-1, 6-0 in the semifinals. Edles advances to the CIF Southern Section Individuals Nov. 17.

Kendra Fisher finished fourth in singles play, after losses to Jaeger (0-6, 1-6) and Moss (1-6, 2-6).

In doubles, Estancia’s Abby Koff and Jennifer Johnston also finished fourth. They lost to Laguan Beach’s duo of Sarah Russell and Allison Azera in the semifinals, 6-7 (0), 6-2, 2-6. Then they lost to Laguna Beach’s Kimmie Smith and Bianca Sganga, 2-6, 5-7.

Newport Harbor 14,

Fountain Valley 4

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Junior Ariana Cernius swept at No. 3 singles to help lead the Sailors in the Sunset League finale Friday.

The Sailors (11-5) finished third in the league with a 6-4 record and have qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs. Playoff pairings will be announced Monday.

Newport Harbor senior Alex McIntosh had a hand in three doubles wins.

Doubles – McIntosh-Sowers (NH) def. S. Tran-Trong, 6-0, lost to Nguyen-Wheelock, 6-7 (4), (sub) McIntosh-Frei (NH) def. Le-Nguyen, 6-2; Shea-Longman (NH) won, 6-0, lost, 1-6, won, 6-1; Kahn-Small (NH) won, 6-3, lost, 0-6, won, 6-2.

CORONA DEL MAR — The Sea Kings clinched the Pacific Coast League title Friday.

Junior Lucas Reynolds had five goals and senior Chris Cottrell had four goals to lead CdM (15-6, 4-0 in league).

Sophomore Isle Anderson collected eight saves and senior Travis Leyton posted four for the Sea Kings, splitting the goalkeeping duties.

University dropped to 13-12, 3-1.

The Bishop’s 5

LA JOLLA — The Sailors won their 21st game of the season and their seventh straight in a nonleague game Friday at The Bishop’s School.

Senior Clinton Jorth led Newport (21-2) with four goals and senior goalkeeper Myles Christian posted 14 saves.

Senior Colin McKibbin had two goals, while Andy Hayes and senior Spencer Richley each added a goal for the Sailors, who play against Ventura today at 2:30 p.m. at Servite High.
