Another comeback win

Dean Yoshiyama’s mantra this season has been like “a song,” the Ocean View High football coach said: Just find a way to win.

Well, in five of their first six games of this 2007 season, the Seahawks have done just that.

For the second-straight week, Ocean View rallied from a two-touchdown deficit, this time, to win its Golden West League opener against host Santa Ana, 28-21, last Friday.

That comeback win came on the heels of a 13-0 deficit the Seahawks faced Oct. 4 against Estancia, yet they battled back to score a 27-26 nonleague victory.

In fact, four of Ocean View’s five wins this year have come by a touchdown or less.

The bottom line, and to Yoshiyama’s liking, is that the Seahawks have, indeed, found a way to win.

“Our kids have shown that there’s no quit in them,” Yoshiyama said. “We’ve come back from a couple of touchdowns down the past two weeks to win, and that’s a great tribute to the fight these kids have.

“We’ve been close in a lot of games the past two years but ended up on the other side of the score, losing some of those games. I think having that experience has helped this year’s group in knowing what it takes to win the close ones.”

Against Santa Ana, Dana Maley threw touchdown passes to Adam To and Richard Lam and rushed for two other scores to lead the Ocean View offense.

Ocean View’s offense averages 23 points per game.

A veteran Segerstrom team (3-3, 0-1) was edged last Friday by host Orange, 22-20, in the teams’ league opener. Coach Mike Maceranka’s Jaguars run the wing-T offense; a quick backfield is led by speedy Francisco Partida, Rodrigo Fernandez and Alfred Tanielu. Partida led the Jaguars in rushing with 161 yards and Fernandez scored two touchdowns in the loss.

Segerstrom started the season 3-1, but lost the last two weeks.

Although 5-1 overall heading into Friday’s game, Yoshiyama appreciates the little things that lead up to game time.

“Really, when anybody asks me about being 5-1, which is great, I tell them that I’m just happy to get through practice each day,” he said. “That’s how it is. We’ve needed kids to step up their game, and they’ve done that. That’s how it’s been with this team all year. We know that Friday is a big, big game for us, and that’s where all our focus will be.”

Other games Friday:

Edison (3-3, 0-1) vs. Marina (3-3, 0-1)

(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)

Marina will look to beat Edison for the first time in eight years when the teams hook up in Westminster.

The Vikings suffered their worst defeat of the season last week when they dropped their Sunset League opener, 58-0, to undefeated Esperanza. It was Marina’s worst loss since a 56-0 setback to Mission Viejo in 2005.

Edison also fell in its Sunset opener, losing 13-9 to Los Alamitos last Friday. The Chargers had plenty of early opportunities to take command. On their first two possessions, they turned the ball over twice inside the Los Al 10-yard line, losing it on a fumbled snap on a field-goal attempt and on a batted pass that was intercepted. They also misfired on two field-goal attempts in the second quarter.

Defensively, the Chargers shut down Los Al quarterback Clark Evans but gave up two big plays in both halves that led to both Los Al touchdowns.

Edison has dropped three straight games, its first such skid since losing its final three games — which included one CIF playoff game — to close out the 2004 season.

Last year’s score: Chargers 37, Vikings 2

Huntington Beach (3-3; 0-1) vs. Northwood (3-3; 0-1)

(at Irvine High, 7 p.m.)

Huntington Beach will attempt to get into the win column in Sea View League play when they visit a Northwood squad that has struggled.

Huntington found itself in a 31-0 hole at halftime last Friday against visiting Trabuco Hills and went on to suffer a 45-14 league-opening defeat. Bobby Duarte threw a pair of TD passes, one to Keith Roberts and the other to Derrick Romo, to account for the Oilers’ scoring.

Northwood limps into the game at 0-6 overall. The Timberwolves fell 26-7 to El Toro in their league opener last week.

Northwood hasn’t mustered much offense in seven games, scoring just 46 total points. Defensively, the Timberwolves have yielded an average of 26 points per game.
