SAN DIEGO — Behind sophomore Patty Chawalitmetha, the UC Irvine women’s golf team won the 19-team Lady Aztec Fall Classic tournament at the Salt Creek Golf Course Tuesday.
Chawalitmetha and teammates Kim Lorenzana and Hillary Packard all finished in the top 10 individually, with Chawalitmetha earning medalist honors.
Chawalitmetha was the only player under par for the tournament, shooting a 140 (70-72) to win her first collegiate title, three shots ahead of Cal State Northridge’s Krystina Gillenwater. Chawailitmetha becomes the fourth UCI women’s player to earn medalist honors, joining Selaneé Henderson, Stella Lee and Walailak Satarak.
As a team, the Anteaters captured the 12th tournament title in program history with a 36-hole total of 593 (297-296). UCI topped second-place East Tennessee State and Hawaii (603) by 10 shots. Eastern Washington was fourth (612), while Middle Tennessee State and Cal State Northridge tied for fifth at 613.
Lorenzana, a senior, tied for third after carding a 148 (72-76), her best career finish. Packard, a freshman, had a team-best 71 Tuesday to move from 50th to a seventh-place tie with a two-day total of 150 (79-71), a top-10 performance in her first collegiate event. Freshman Sarah Fox was 23rd after shooting a 153 (76-77) and senior Selaneé Henderson was 96th with a score of 170 (89-81).
UCI will travel to the Kent Youel Invitational Oct. 30-31 in Honolulu, Hawaii.
The Prestige at PGA West
LA QUINTA — The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished seventh, tied with Michigan Tuesday.
UCI junior Tim Cha finished 19th at two-over-par 218.
He shot a three-under 69 in the final round after shooting 76-73 in Monday’s first two rounds.
Sophomore John Chin placed 27th at 220 (74-75-71) for the Anteaters and junior Sean Shahi was 41st at 224 (69-72-83), senior Kenny Kim finished 54th at 225 (74-74-77) and freshman Bryan Harris was 59th at 226 (75-75-76).
Minnesota’s Clayton Rask and Wisconsin’s Dan Woltman tied for medalist honors at eight-under 208.
Charlotte captured the team title with a 54-hole total of 10-under 854. Stanford was second at 862 and Central Florida third with 869. UCI and Michigan tied for seventh at 879.

COSTA MESA — Jordan Joseph and Brian Siemonsma both scored goals for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference contest Tuesday.
Joseph’s goal, a penalty kick, opened the scoring.
Siemonsma scored on an assist from John Shinjo to give OCC a 2-1 lead..
Fullerton then tied it and scored in the 88th minute to prevail.
Dane Fernandez had six saves for OCC (6-5-4, 2-3-2 in conference).

Vanguard
SAN DIEGO — The No. 15-ranked Lions were swept, 31-29, 30-20, 30-24, in a Golden State Athletic Conference match Tuesday at Point Loma.
Sophomore outside hitter Kelsey Wirt had team highs of 12 kills and 24 digs for Vanguard (7-11, 5-8 in conference). Kim Wynn had 11 kills and Heather DeJongh added 10 for the Lions.
