UC Irvine 2, Cal State Fullerton 1

FULLERTON — Freshman Spencer Thompson beat Tyler Andrews in one-on-one from the top of the box to score the game-winning goal for UC Irvine as the ‘Eaters defeated Cal State Fullerton Saturday night. Thompson scored just four minutes into overtime to put the ‘Eaters on top 2-1 for a Big West Conference win at Titan Stadium.

Junior Shane Westbrook converted a penalty kick at the 65:41 mark to put the Anteaters (6-3-3, 1-2-1) up 1-0, but Jacob Shumway tied the match less than 10 minutes later to make it 1-1 at the 75:16 mark, which sent the game into overtime. Goalkeeper Pat Barton finished with three saves, while Fullerton goalie Brent Douglas had four before picking up a red card in the 66th minute. Tyler Andrews had no saves for Fullerton in 28 minutes. The ‘Eaters host Big West foe Cal Poly at Anteater Stadium Oct. 20th at 7:00 p.m.

Southern California Tournament

IRVINE — UC Irvine finished eighth in the Southern California Tournament after losing twice Sunday, first to Long Beach State in the consolation semifinal, and then to Loyola Marymount in the seventh-place game at Anteater Pool.

IRVINE — Freshman Tanya Taylor scored two goals to lead the Anteaters to a 2-1 Big West Conference victory over US Santa Barbara Sunday night at Anteater Stadium.

It was UCI’s first conference victory since Oct. 23, 2005 when UCI defeated Long Beach State 2-0.

Taylor scored her first goal in the eight minute when senior Makenzie Beahm passed the ball up the field to senior Kim Horn, who kicked it to Taylor.

Taylor beat goalkeeper Katie Wright for the score at the 7:25 mark to put the ‘Eaters (7-5-1, 1-1) up 1-0. The Gauchos tied the match at 1-1 when Kailyn Kuger scored off of Jaqui Simon’s pass at the 44:54 mark.

Taylor scored her last goal on an assist from senior Frankee Kelly at the 45:46 mark.
