HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:

FRESNO — The Newport Harbor High boys’ cross country team captured the championship in the large schools division of the Clovis Invitational Saturday at Woodward Park.

Mike Puncel, Jake Dawson, Rex Nelson, Alex Crawford and Michael Taylor finished in the top 17 to help the Sailors bring home the title with 72 points. Second-place Yucaipa scored 134.

The large schools division was one level lower than the highest, which was the sweepstakes.

Puncel led Newport Harbor with an 11th-place finish in 16 minutes, 16 seconds on the 5K course. Dawson was 13th in 16:18, Crawford 16th in 16:29 and Taylor 17th in 16:30. Scott Figueroa (40th in 16:53) and Carlos Urquidez (49th in 16:58) also competed for the Sailors.

Newport Harbor’s Murphy Hitchcock, who has competed on the varsity level this season, won the junior varsity large schools division race in 16:28, as the Sailors also won that title.

Newport Harbor will compete in the Orange County Championships Saturday at Irvine Park.

Clovis Invitational

FRESNO — Estancia High’s Fernando Orozco finished seventh in 16 minutes, 29 seconds to help the Eagles take seventh in Division IV at Woodward Park’s 5K course Saturday.

Jorge Martin came in 26th in 16:54 and Wes Barloon was 38th in 17:09 for the Eagles. Damian Leon (38th in 18:03), Miguel Perez (78th in 18:17), Willy Rodriguez (98th in 18:40) and Santiago Gugino (111th in 19:02) also competed for Estancia.

McFarland won the Division IV race.

Clovis Invitational

FRESNO — Newport Harbor High’s Erica Pearson finished 15th in 18 minutes, 47 seconds to help the Sailors come in seventh in the championship division on the 5K course at Woodward Park Saturday.

Carondelet of Concord, the defending CIF Division II state champion, won the race. Newport Harbor’s Sophia Ditty finished 24th in 19:00 and Tori Sarris was 41st in 19:28 in the race that included 132 girls.

Desiree Alexander (58th in 19:51), Ava Nelson (68th in 20:03), Kelly DeYoung (70th in 20:04) and Stephanie Case (86th in 20:18) also contributed for the Sailors, who will next compete in the Orange County Championships at Irvine Park Saturday.

Durango Fall Classic

LAS VEGAS — Newport Harbor High defeated Redondo Union, 26-24, 28-26, to finish fifth Saturday.

Newport Harbor seniors Alex Penewell and Alesha Young were named to the all-tournament team.

The Sailors were 6-1 in the two-day tournament, their only defeat coming in the quarterfinals to Mira Costa, the team that captured the championship.

Mira Costa beat Newport Harbor, 29-27, 23-25, 25-18.

The Sailors opened the day with a 25-22, 25-14 victory over Buchanan of Clovis. Newport Harbor also defeated Eagle High, 25-22, 25-14 in a fifth-place semifinal match.
