SANTA BARBARA — Redshirt freshman Brandon Johnson added an extra-man goal with 25 seconds left in regulation to lift No. 6 UC Irvine over No. 8 UC Santa Barbara Sunday.
The Anteaters defeated the Gauchos 9-8, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener at the Gauchos’ Campus Pool Sunday.
Zsombor Vincze’s fourth goal of the game gave the Gauchos (11-7, 0-1) an 8-7 lead with 1:51 left to play, but UCI senior Tim Hutten tied the game with 1:24 remaining. Hutten leads the team with 37 goals this season.
The Anteaters (6-3, 1-0) trailed 6-3 at halftime but third-quarter goals from Johnson, Colin Mello and Cole Bitter, helped put the Anteaters in position for the win.
Johnson, Mello and Bitter each scored two goals for the Anteaters and Milos Golic added three. The victory marked the fourth time this season a game has been decided by one-goal for UCI, which had defeated UCSB 8-7 in a non-conference game Sept. 20.
UCI hosts No. 3 UCLA Friday night at 7:00 in an MPSF game at Anteater Pool.

COLORADO SPRINGS — The UC Irvine women’s soccer team defeated Air Force 2-1 Sunday afternoon to finish second in the Falcon Invitational at Cadet Soccer Stadium.
The Anteaters (5-3-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 68th minute when freshman Caty Cope passed the ball up to freshman Tanya Taylor, who scored from 10 yards out.
Freshman Milana Shabestari converted a penalty kick in the 75th minute to give the Anteaters the last score of the game. The Falcons answered when Susan Finch scored in the 76th minute off an assist from Roni Yadlin cutting UCI’s lead to 2-1.
Junior goal keeper Erin Henry had four saves for UCI, while Ashlee Curtis had two saves for Air Force.
Freshman Nikki Forrest was named the Offensive MVP of the Falcon Invitational.
The Anteaters will continue on the road to face San Francisco Friday at 5:00 p.m. at Negoesco Stadium.
