Costa Mesa firefighters received a call of a two-alarm fire Sunday morning after a boy noticed smoke in his bedroom, authorities said.
The fire broke out just before 9:15 a.m. in a second floor apartment in the 800 block of Center Street. Firefighters received the call soon after and quickly responded, authorities said.
No one was injured in the fire, although 27 people were displaced for the night, as at least eight units experience some kind of smoke or water damage, Battalion Chief Kirk Dominic said.
The apartment where the fire broke out was completely destroyed by smoke, heat and water damage, Dominic said. The unit below suffered major water damage.
The boy, whose name was not released by the fire department, was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach for mild smoke inhalation, Dominic said. He was released shortly after.
Fire investigators have not determined the cause of the fire, Dominic said.
