Hollywood graphic designer and Huntington Beach resident Richard Donald Kurtz died Tuesday at Hoag Hospital, where he was taken after Costa Mesa police arrested him on suspicion of drunk driving.
Kurtz, 45, was arrested at 2:45 p.m. Saturday in the 1800 block of Pitcairn Drive after reportedly driving erratically and failing a sobriety test, according to police. Shortly after he got to the city jail, he became unresponsive and medical help was called, Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Bryan Glass said.
Kurtz was taken to Hoag, where he was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. Tuesday, police said. The Orange County District Attorney’s office is investigating, as it typically does with deaths in police custody, but no other information is being released. A website for Kurtz’s graphic design business, “Kurtz Unlimited,” indicates he died of a brain aneurysm.
The website also says the company provided graphics and design services for TV shows such as “Entourage,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Access Hollywood.” A memorial celebration is set for 7 p.m. Thursday at Huntington Beach’s lifeguard tower #7 near 1st Street and Pacific Coast Highway.
