Cause of fire in Costa Mesa surfboard shop unknown

The cause of a Thursday fire in a Costa Mesa surfboard shop is still under investigation, fire officials said Friday. Costa Mesa and Newport Beach firefighters responded about 2:57 p.m. to a two-alarm fire at Baltierra Custom Surfboards, 629 Terminal Way, near Newport Boulevard and West 17th Street, Costa Mesa Battalion Chief Kirk Dominic said.

A total of 12 trucks and other vehicles and 42 firefighters put out the fire in 30 minutes. The estimated cost of the damage was not available, but Dominic said it was isolated to one unit. Because of the Styrofoam, resins and other chemicals used by the shop, firefighters used foam rather than water to extinguish the blaze.
