Build new City Hall in the middle of Newport

Where is downtown Newport Beach?

I am the daughter of the late former Newport Beach Councilman Paul Hummel. It’s my opinion my dad would give the green light for the new City Hall to be built at the park.

He would ask locals, friends and tourists where is the center/downtown of Newport Beach? No one could answer. Is it CdM, Peninsula, Mariners Mile, Newport Coast? Where is it? My father thought the City Hall outgrew its location on the peninsula a long time ago.

Please vote to build the new City Hall where it belongs. It would be in the middle of Newport Beach, close to Fashion Island, fire, police, medical buildings, office buildings etc. If you question the traffic it will produce, tell me today where there is no traffic in Newport Beach and I will take you to dinner.

In closing, the new park at Jamboree and PCH is a waste of space, it’s a dirt patch.

Conference a good experience for students

I was not surprised to read your fine article about Leigh Steinberg (“On top of their game,” Aug. 20) and his interest in environmental issues.

He has been interested in things other than star athletes for some time.

As a parent and former Peace Corps Volunteer, a couple of years ago I attended a conference designed for high school students regarding international topics. Of the few adults present at the meeting, I was met at the door by Steinberg. She and her husband had organized the meeting.

It was a wonderful conference that exposed the students to many “real world” issues.

Council seems to be trashing traditions

I was stunned when I read the article (“Annual fish fry may be cooked,” Aug. 15) regarding the planned skate board facility at Costa Mesa Lions Park!

What is wrong with our Costa Mesa leadership? It appears they (City Council) are trying to do away with our city’s long-time traditions! Being almost a lifetime resident of our great Costa Mesa, my family and I have enjoyed the annual fish fry. My daughter celebrated her birthday at the fish fry for probably 12 years of her early life. The parade was wonderful; one of my brothers rode one of our horses in the parade many years ago.

Also, the fish fry is like a reunion where we meet up with many old friends and reconnect! Have you inquired as to how much money the Lions Club has given to our local youth groups throughout its history? Why not place the skateboard facility at Fairview Park? It’s wide open! Makes more sense as we already have one placed between East Costa Mesa and Mesa North — farther into West Costa Mesa seems ideal. Lions Park is perfect for the fish fry. I’m a 63-year resident of Costa Mesa and I love my city!
