Ex-Eagle defeated in final

QUINCY, Mass. — Estancia High product Matt Fuerbringer and his partner, Casey Jennings, were defeated by Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, 21-16, 21-12, in the men’s final of the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals’ Boston Open Saturday.
Fuerbringer and Jennings, the No. 8 seed, defeated Costa Mesa resident Mike Lambert and Stein Metzger, the No. 1 seed, 17-21, 21-19, 15-9, in the semifinals to advance to the title match against the No. 2-seeded duo.
Fuerbringer and Jennings split the $21,000 runner-up prize, while Dalhausser and Rogers will divide the $28,000 first-place purse. It was the eighth victory this season for Dalhausser and Rogers.
Lambert and Metzger shared third place, good for a $13,300 payoff, while Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb split $8,500 with his partner Sean Rosenthal for sharing fifth place. Gibb and Rosenthal were the No. 3 seed.
Newport Harbor High product Ty Tramblie and partner Mike Morrison finished tied for 17th.
In the women’s event, top-seeded Misty May-Treanor, a former Newport Harbor star, and partner Kerri Walsh earned a berth in today’s semifinals by defeating No. 4-seeded Tyra Turner and Rachel Wacholder, 21-16, 21-13, in a 36-minute winner’s bracket match Saturday night.
The other semifinal will include No. 2-seeded Elaine Youngs and Nicole Branagh, who won their winner’s bracket match, 21-19, 21-14, Saturday night against Dianne DeNecochea and Barbara Fontana.
Newport Harbor High alumna April Ross can qualify for the semifinals with her partner, Jennifer Boss, should they beat DeNocochea and Fontana today.
May-Treanor and Walsh are attempting to win the 11th straight AVP event they have played in this year.
