USA WINS BRONZE

BANGKOK, Thailand — The U.S. women’s golf team, which includes UC Irvine standout Selaneé Henderson, claimed the bronze medal at the World University Games Friday.

Henderson, along with teammates Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana and Mary Jacobs, combined for a four-round total of 603 at the Water Mill Golf and Gardens course. Henderson finished 45th with a 57-over-par 345. Mexico won the gold with a score of 601 and Ireland was in second at 602.

TRYOUTS ON SUNDAY

The Newport Beach Riptide 18 Gold girls’ fastpitch softball team will be holding tryouts on Sunday and Aug. 25 at Bonita Creek Park in Newport Beach from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Riptide has reached the American Softball Assn. Nationals three of the past four years and all 28 seniors from the 2005, 2006 and 2007 teams have received college softball scholarship offers, according to Barry Grumman of the Riptide.

GREELEY FINISHES STRONG

Bryce Greeley, who graduated from Newport Harbor High in June, shot two-under-par 69 in the final round of the Tee Up Junior Golf Challenge Aug. 7 to finish 27th over three rounds in the 60-player field at Industry Hills Golf Club.

Greeley’s 69 was bettered by only 13 players in the 54-hole American Junior Golf Assn. event.

Greeley, who is bound for Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, carded 73 and 78 his first two rounds, before making his late charge.

Alex Kang of Oak Park won the event with a 10-under 203.
