U.S. WOMEN IN FOURTH

NAKHONNAYAK, Thailand — The U.S. women’s golf team, including UC Irvine standout Selaneé Henderson, moved up two more spots to fourth place after the third round of the World University Games Thursday at Watermill Golf and Gardens.

Henderson, the Big West Conference Player of the Year as a junior last season, shot 86 Thursday and is in 45th place after three rounds (260).

Americans Jennifer Tangtiphaiboontana and Mary Jacobs are tied for sixth (228) and eighth (229), respectively, helping Team USA post a team score of 457, 10 shots behind first-place Ireland.

The USA women will be back on the course today for the fourth and final round.

SLAMMERS FARE WELL

DANVILLE, Calif. — The Newport-Mesa Slammers Futbol Club under-16 and under-15 soccer teams won and tied, respectively, Sunday in Red Bull Girls’ National League play.

The under-16 team defeated Atlanta Fire United, 2-1, behind goals from Kellie Culbertson and Mia Bruno.

The victory gave the locals a 2-1 record after three games of the nine-game schedule. The 18-team league competes in three separate three-day sessions, in which teams play one game a day.

The Slammers’ under-16 unit is tied for third in the league standings.

The remaining two three-day sessions are scheduled for March in Las Vegas and for May in New Jersey.

The Slammers’ under-15 squad played a scoreless tie against De Anza Force, dropping the Slammers’ league record to 2-0-1, tied for second in the league standings.
