TITLE UP FOR GRABS

The Costa Mesa City Golf Championship begins Saturday at the Costa Mesa Country Club.

The championship flight begins at 6:00 a.m. on the Mesa Linda course. There are 164 men entered in the championship flight, and 56 in the senior flight. An additional 75 are playing in the first flight, and 42 will play in the second flight.

Joey Benedetti won the championship last year with a nine-under 133.

MESA POLO SOLID

Players from the Costa Mesa High boys’ water polo team recently finished their summer schedule by beating Los Amigos, 16-6, July 24 at Orange High.

Coach Justin Taylor said the club went 6-0 in the six-week Orange Grove night league, which took place every Tuesday night for six weeks. Against Los Amigos, incoming senior Sam Edman and incoming junior Cody Serrano each scored five goals.

Dustin Serrano and Skyler Twohig each scored twice, with Gabe Sanchez and Marlo Afuang adding goals. Dane Shambrook made six saves.

Costa Mesa also beat Orange, Whittier, El Modena, Santa Ana and Santa Ana Valley in the tournament. It also participated in two tournaments at Tustin High in July, going 4-1 in both tournaments. Taylor said Mesa finished with a summer record of 21-8.
