RESTAURANT ROUNDUP:Bootlegger Bar rustic yet classic
It may be located in one of the swankest areas of California, but the Bootlegger Bar at Crystal Cove State Park has an image on the rustic side: a thatched roof leading to a patio, cedar paneling, and wooden chairs and tables that could have come from a scrappy diner on the boardwalk.
Still, there are visible signs that the bar, which opened July 23, has affluence on its side. On the walls are posters for classic movies — “Rain” with Joan Crawford, “Treasure Island” with Jackie Cooper, “Sadie Thompson” with Gloria Swanson — filmed in the surrounding area. And stretching out before the patio is, well, the Pacific Ocean.
The Bootlegger is the latest addition to the Beachcomber Café, which opened last August. The bar holds up to 37 people and is open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on the weekends.
In addition to cocktails, the bar serves shrimp, tacos and other appetizers. The bar and restaurant are at 15 Crystal Cove in Newport Coast and can be reached at (949) 376-6900.
