Ice cold Surf City USA

You can wear Surf City USA on a shirt, run in its marathon, or ride a beach cruiser bike named after it. Now, you can even drink it.

Local microbrewery BrewBakers is geared up to sell six flavors of soda, from cola to orange cream, using the Huntington Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau’s official Surf City USA trademark.

The city’s official root beer is already on sale at the Friday farmer’s market at Pier Plaza, and other flavors should hit some stores within weeks.

Premium soda is a perfect fit with the laid-back image of Huntington Beach, said BrewBakers owner Dennis Midden.

“With the city coming up with licensed products, we were kind of a natural for them to go to,” he said. “Our sodas are the old-fashioned, full-flavored kind. We’ve been in business for more than a decade, and we’re right here in Huntington Beach.”

Midden said he is ready to get the drinks into local stores in three weeks. He’s negotiating with supermarkets and expects them to start selling in a few months, while he has hopes of distributing the sodas in hotels, airlines and other upscale venues.

It’s the first edible item in the bureau’s aggressive marketing campaign for the city, but it likely won’t be the last, said the group’s president Doug Traub.

“This is a first step in this area, and we’ll be very interested in where it goes from here,” he said. “When you think about surf, sand, sun and fun, all the things that go into this unique Southern California lifestyle, it could be anything from flip-flops to suntan lotions, even furniture. These are the kind of things that naturally would evoke a Huntington Beach state of mind.”

While BrewBakers also brews beer, there are no current plans to license it under the city trademark.

“I don’t think the city is ready for that,” Midden said.
