NEWPORT BEACH — The Newport Hills Killer Whales topped their neighborhood rival the Harbor View Dolphins, 680-653, on Saturday at the Dolphins’ pool.
Newport Hills swimmers set four team records at the South Coast Swim Conference meet — two for relays and two individual. In the boys’ 9-10 year-old 100-yard medley relay, Taylor Cortens, Brett Greenlee, Danny Robertson and Nick Schroeder set a team record with a time of 1 minute, 4.60 seconds.
Teammates Christian Garkani, Nick Furgatch, Ben Zepfel and Blake Motal set a record in the boys’ 11-12, 200 medley relay, touching in 2:06.26. Cortens also broke his own team record in the 9-10, 50 backstroke (34.05 seconds) and set a team record of 1:12.44 in the 100 individual medley.
Cortens’ 100 IM time broke the Harbor View pool record of 1:14.39, which was set by Newport Harbor High product and Olympic gold medalist Aaron Peirsol.
The Killer Whales were led by the 11-12 boys age group, which took first in all five individual races and two relays, including three first-place finishes by Blake Motal. Harbor View, meanwhile, did the same in the girls’ 9-10 (three firsts by Katie Craig) and 11-12 (three firsts by Delaney Pouch) divisions.
For Newport Hills, three-time winners also included Madeline Musselman (7-8 girls’ 25 free, 25 fly, 50 free); J.T. Russell (7-8 boys’ 25 free, 25 back and 50 free); Cortens (9-10 boys’ 50 back, 100 IM, 50 free); and Jeff Condino (13-14 boys’ 50 free, 50 fly and 100 IM).
Two-time winners included Chloe Harbilas (6-and-under girls’ 25 free and 25 fly), Hollace Barden (13-14 girls’ 50 free and 50 fly) and Mary Flynn (15-18 girls’ 50 breast and 50 fly).
Multiple event winners for Harbor View were Luke Chelf (6-and-under boys’ 25 breast and 25 fly); Craig in the 9-10 girls’ 25 fly, 50 back and 100 IM; Delaney Pouch (11-12 girls’ 50 free, 50 back and 100 IM), Jules Pouch (11-12 girls’ 50 breast and 50 fly); Pippa Saunders (13-14 girls’ 50 breast and 100 IM); Kate Berry (15-18 girls’ 50 free and 100 IM) and Tim Simo (15-18 boys’ 50 breast and 100 IM).
Also making a special appearance was Anaheim Ducks goalie Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who brought the Stanley Cup to the Harbor View pool for a photo opportunity.
