Locals compete in all-star matches

The 30th annual Dave Mohs Orange County All-Star boys’ and girls’ volleyball matches take place today at Newport Harbor High, with several area players participating.

The matches, which are North against South, begin with the girls’ match at 6 p.m. That match will feature Corona del Mar High seniors Kelly Christian and Julianne Piggott and Newport Harbor senior Katie Wells.

Piggott was the Dream Team Player of the Year in the fall.

The boys’ match which follows features CdM seniors Blaine Nielsen and Phil Bannan and the Sailors’ Weston Dunlap, who play for UCLA in the fall. CdM Coach Steve Conti, who guided the Sea Kings to the CIF Southern Section Division II title, is a coach for the South team.
