Newport Harbor sailing team takes national title
A Newport Harbor High School sailing team finished first in the National High School Doublehanded Championship, held last weekend at the U.S. Sailing Center in Long Beach.
The team — consisting of students Charlie Buckingham, Michael Menninger, Blair Belling, Brooke Thomson, Caitlin Beavers and Chris Segerblom — beat 19 competitors during the two-day tournament. Two other Newport Beach schools finished in the top 10, with Corona del Mar High School placing seventh and the private Sage Hill School finishing ninth.
Newport Harbor’s sailors, led by coach Caleb Silsby, joined in 36 races on Saturday and Sunday. According to the Sailing Center, Newport Harbor’s first-place finish was its fourth in the last 12 years.
“I’m extraordinarily proud of this awesome group,” Silsby said in a news release. “They’re a great team.”
