The 50th annual City of Laguna Beach Tennis Tournament came to a close Sunday with winners emerging in 14 divisions.
The tournament, which began the weekend of April 21-22, was played at Alta Laguna Park.
A first-time entry into the long-running event was Ted Ratsep. The Aliso Niguel resident, who moved to Orange County six months ago from London, Canada, made the most of his first appearance by winning two divisions titles, the Men’s Open singles and Men’s Open doubles.
Ratsep, 42, edged Jeff Kizer in a close Men’s Open singles final, 7-6, 4-6, 7-5.
In addition, he teamed with Manjeet Randhawa to win the Men’s Open double title. The pair won the doubles title on total sets, 6-4, over Kizer and Paul Newton who finished second.
Kizer and Newton had defeated Ratsep and Randhawa in round robin play.
“It was a great event with great courts and a beautiful location,” said Ratsep, who works for an engineering company. “Jeff was a very good player and that last match was very tough.”
Ratsep, who began playing at age seven, said tennis is his “first love,” and that work “comes second.”
