A brief sprinkling
Much-needed rainfall was short-lived in Newport-Mesa on Friday, letting up in most areas by the afternoon.
The National Weather Service forecasted clear skies for Friday night and dry conditions today, but another system could be heading for the area late Sunday, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration spokesman Steve Vanderburg said Friday.
John Wayne Airport reported 0.2 inches of rain Friday afternoon, while in Newport Beach only 0.13 inches were reported near the harbor, Vanderburg said.
The weather could have been the cause of accidents throughout the county, including in Costa Mesa, but no major traffic collisions were reported.
Lifeguards reported a steady southeasterly wind blowing at about 20 mph all day, with a dark cloud front looking like it was going to blow over the beaches.
Other than whitecaps, the wind didn’t kick up much swell, with waves measuring about 1 to 2 feet, with occasional 3-foot sets, Lifeguard Officer Gary Conwell said.
At the airport, business went on as usual, and there were no reported delays or significant effects, spokeswoman Jenny Wedge said.
Temperatures today should be in the mid-60s during the day with a continued southwest wind. Lows were forecast to be about 54.
On Sunday there’s a 50% chance of rain, but the weather system probably won’t arrive here till Sunday evening, Vanderburg said. The high temperature should be about 63 degrees, with a low about 10 degrees cooler on Sunday night.
