HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:Smith leads Sage Hill to victory

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Bayle Smith recorded 21 kills and Michael Bear amassed 43 assists to lead the Sage Hill School boys’ volleyball team to a 25-19, 21-25, 19-25, 25-15, 15-9 Academy League win Tuesday.

Joey Booth added 11 kills and Mattias Russo-Larsson had 16 digs for Sage Hill (7-7, 3-2 in league), which plays at Oxford Academy on Friday at 5 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 15, Beckman 3IRVINE — The Sea Kings swept all nine doubles sets in a Pacific Coast League win Thursday at Beckman.

The Sea Kings teams of Dustin Hladek and Parker Rhodes, Charlie Corum and Josh Kim, and Hootan Mehr and Bryan Buchert only dropped a total of five games in their nine wins. Fabian Matthews also won three sets at No. 1 singles for CdM (14-1, 5-0), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll.

CdM plays host to Laguna Hills on Thursday.

Estancia 14, Calvary Chapel 4COSTA MESA — Junior Bradley Fisher and sophomore Ely Zaidler swept in singles to help lead the Eagles to the Orange Coast League win Tuesday.

Nick Oliver and Rony Argueta swept at No. 2 doubles. One of their wins includes a 7-6 (7-3) victory for Estancia (10-5, 5-1 in league), which plays at Costa Mesa on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Corona del Mar 16, Beckman 4CORONA DEL MAR — Austin Elliott, Greg Garte, Kevin Holland and Danny Moskovits hit a double each to contribute to the Sea Kings’ 17-hit attack in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.

The Sea Kings (14-4, 6-1 in league) were up 13-0 after three innings. Danny Moskovits pitched through four innings and improved to 5-1.

Sage Hill 4,NEWPORT COAST — Danny Hurst pitched five shutout innings, striking out seven and allowing one hit to pick up his first win and freshman Sean Vogel came in the sixth and threw two hitless frames with five strikeouts for his first save in the Lightning’s Academy League victory Tuesday.

Brethren Christian 1

Chris Griffin went two for three with two RBIs and Danny Hurst was two for three with a double and an RBI for Sage Hill (6-8, 4-4 in league).

The Lightning play Brethren Christian on Friday again at Sage Hill, but Brethren will be the home team because it does not have its own diamond.

Beckman 2, Corona del Mar 0IRVINE — Catcher Katrina Gaar went two for three for the Sea Kings in a Pacific Coast League loss Tuesday at Beckman.

Holly Van Hiel added a hit for CdM (8-10, 4-3 in league). Michelle Tolfa pitched the complete game and struck out four, but the Sea Kings defense committed three errors behind her.

Beckman improved to 6-9, 3-2 in league.

The two teams play again Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Corona del Mar High.

Also scoring for Estancia (14-4, 9-0 in league) were Andrew Ayala (41), Evan Williams (42), Jon Person (42) and Storm Hagen (43).

The Eagles play Laguna Beach today at San Clemente Golf Course.

Los Alamitos 193,CYPRESS — Bryce Greeley and Andrew Skjonsby both shot two-over-par 39s to lead the Sailors in the Sunset League match Tuesday at Navy Golf Course on Tuesday.

Newport Harbor 204

Chase Behr and Justin Morehead carded 41s, while Steve Stoneman finished at 44 for Newport Harbor (10-6, 4-2 in league), which will face Edison Thursday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Sage Hill 211, Whitney 231DOWNEY — Lightning freshman James Chai shot four-over-par 39 to share medalist honors with Whitney’s Joey Tirona and led Sage to the Academy League win at Los Amigos Country Club Tuesday.

Steven Choi (40), Geoff Grant (41), Mac Mace (45) and Ryan Babbush (46) also contributed for the Lightning (13-2, 9-1 in league). Sage Hill will face St. Margaret’s, which is undefeated in league, today at Big Canyon Country Club.
