REEL FANS:’Blades’ thick with physical, slapstick humor

Daily Pilot staffer Sue Thoensen went to Edwards Metro Pointe 12 to get moviegoers’ opinions of “Blades of Glory,” starring Will Ferrell, Jon Heder, Craig T. Nelson and Amy Poehler.

Competitive figure skaters Chazz Michael Michaels (Ferrell) and Jimmy MacElroy (Heder) are stripped of their Olympic gold medals and barred from men’s singles competition after their tie and ensuing brawl on the podium at the medals ceremony.

When a loophole in the skating rules allows the men to compete as a pairs team is discovered, they begin training with MacElroy’s former coach (Nelson) to recapture the gold for good.

“T he movie was a little gross, but it made me laugh. I’m a Will Ferrell fan, and I have seen some of his other movies. It’s absolutely fun to go see a silly movie every once in a while. I liked it when he [Ferrell] was struggling to make it to the finals on time.”

“The movie was completely senseless but a whole lot of fun. My kids made me a Will Ferrell fan. They introduced me to him. I liked that the two guys were great together — I thought they played off of each other really well.”

“I thought the movie was comic brilliance, a great script, with this yin-yang, “fire and ice” concept going…. I love Will Ferrell’s style — improvisation — so when he was leaving voice mails all night long, he just had these great lines that had to have been improvisation. It’s timeless when you can get lost in a comedy and just laugh your head off and then come out kind of all tired but feeling good.”

“I thought the movie was truly mind-boggling. I’m absolutely a Will Ferrell fan, and I was a little disappointed in his performance. I thought it was shameful the way he trivialized the tragedy of sex addiction, a problem that plagues America, and they made light of it. I thought that was terrible. And I forgot that Louis Armstrong went to the moon. I was pleased to have him remind me of that. It was wonderful, slapstick humor — physical humor all the way. I thought this and ‘300’ were the best comedies of the year.”

“I thought the movie was hysterical. It’s got a little bit of something for everybody, at least as long as you like physical humor. Then it’s a laugh riot. If you don’t have a sense of humor, I would avoid it. I’m very much a Will Ferrell fan — he’s done tons of great stuff. My favorite part is probably when they’re introduced to their practice area — the storage room that somebody ran the garden hose in — and then they had to start demonstrating their ‘manhood,’ and finally ending in the penguin slide.”
