REEL CRITIC:Double the grit, violence

You’ll come away from “Grindhouse” thinking it’s either the trashiest, most violent film ever, which it is, or an inspired homage to cheesy ‘70s B-movies, which it is.

Created as a double feature, directors Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino make you feel like you’ve gone back in time watching scratchy, sometimes disjointed movies with little-known actors. The men are absurdly macho, and the girls are all hotties but tough as nails.

First on the program is Rodriguez’s “Planet Terror,” a gross-out zombie story of the highest (or lowest?) order featuring Bruce Willis, Freddy Rodriguez, and Rose McGowan as a one-legged go-go-dancer. The deadpan humor is great, but I may never eat red sauce again.

The better feature is Tarantino’s “Death Proof,” which starts out slowly but turns into a real nail-biter. The terrific Kurt Russell and Zoe Bell (Uma Thurman’s stunt double in “Kill Bill”) did most of their own hair-raising stunts. The photography, especially during the car chase scenes, is amazing.

The hilariously faked “coming attractions” are the best reason to see this film. With titles like “Machete” or “Werewolf Women of the SS,” how can you stay away?
