Piranhas power way to polo title

Huntington Beach Piranhas Water Polo Club’s boys’ eighth-grade “A” team captured first-place in its division at the 2007 Orange County Speedo Cup held March 17-18 at the William J. Woollett Center in Irvine.
Huntington fielded three teams in the tournament and two of them finished with the “A” team winning the White Flight division title and its “B” team placing third in the Blue Flight division.
Coach John Filipponi’s team defeated South Bay (5-1) and North Irvine (13-5) on Saturday then came back on Sunday to beat Cal Baptist (7-2) and in the title game, ripped Long Beach Shore, 13-2.
During the four games, center Tiki Toplak scored key goals out of two meters, John Lovat, Sean Longdin and Jordan Lisnock were the team’s top scorers and utility Max Schultz provided scoring opportunities down low.
Defensively, Patrick Shearer, Griffen Camps and attackers Jameson Shively, Brent Bazzell, Ian Arnold, Kyle Spreeman and Jourdan Richman applied the pressure.
In club soccer:
South Coast Bayern, a Huntington Beach-based boys’ Under-14 club soccer team, won two games on opening weekend at the State Cup playoffs.
South Coast won its first match handily in defeating San Diego, 6-0. It also topped Manhattan Beach, 3-1. The two wins advance the squad into second-round playoff action April 15-16.
South Coast 6, San Diego 0
Trevor Hatchard, Marco Aguirre, Kyle MacLeod, Charlie Miller and Jason Fernandez paced the South Coast offense and the defensive play of Zack LaCavera, Spencer Fuqua, Brett Morinaka and goalie Cameron McArthur led to the shutout.
South Coast 3, Manhattan Beach 1
Nick Barton, Kyle MacLeod and Sean Atwood scored goals and Frankie Valdez had an assist to lead South Coast on offense.
Anthony Martin and David Hernandez led the defense.
