Edison jumps to hot start

The Edison High baseball team has won its first five Sunset League games, yet head coach Steve Lambright said he’s not about to celebrate.

He knows there’s plenty of baseball left to play in one of the Southern Section’s toughest leagues.

Edison ran its league mark to 5-0 Friday with a 7-0 shutout of rival Fountain Valley. Junior right-hander Greg Davis held the host Barons to a one hit in running his record to 4-1.

The Chargers pounded out 14 hits, including a triple by junior Kyle Higashioka and doubles by senior Brent Meschuk, Ryan Sheeks and Billy Silvestri.

Previously, Edison used a seventh-inning rally at Los Alamitos to stun the host Griffins, 6-5. Senior Justin DeMarco drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning. Senior Michael Kuehn later scored on a wild pitch and DeMarco came home on a runs scoring single by Silvestri.

“This team’s coming around but our league is so tough,” Lambright said. “We just happen to beat a couple of quality teams (Esperanza and Los Alamitos) by a single run. We had key pitching and key hitting in the right spots.

“I said all along that we have the team to compete in league but I’m not too excited. We’re happy to be 5-0 in league at this point but there are 10 tough league games still ahead of us.”

Edison spent the first four days of its spring break in San Diego where the Chargers are competing the multi-divisional Lions Tournament played at various sites throughout San Diego.

On Monday, the Chargers fell behind Valencia of Valencia by three runs, rallied late but ended up on the short end of a 3-2 score to the Vikings.

Valencia is ranked seventh in the CIF-Southern Section Division I poll.

Hitting highlights for the Chargers included consecutive doubles by DeMarco, Meschuk and Silvestri.

Edison completes tournament play today.
