LITTLE LEAGUE ROUNDUP:A’s duo tosses no-hitter in win
Grant Mayeaux and Max Gibbs combined to pitch a no-hitter Saturday as the A’s took care of the Twins, 4-1, in Majors Division play at Ocean View Little League.
Mayeaux pitched four innings and Gibbs the final two. The duo combined to strike out 14.
Robert Cornwell singled, tripled, drove in a run and scored twice to lead the A’s offensively. Tyler Hammock also had a hit and Evan Corey an RBI-sacrifice fly.
Twins pitchers Casey Hayes and Drew Stanfield combined to strike out 10.
In other Majors action:
Cardinals 5, Yankees 3
Jake Rubino hit a two-run double in the third inning Saturday that proved to be the difference for the Cardinals, who defeated the Yankees for the second time this season.
Also getting hits for the Cardinals were Matt Butler with two, and Kyle Jepson with one. Butler also threw four innings and gave up three runs on four hits.
Rubino pitched the final two innings and didn’t allow a run.
The Yankees had five hits in the game. Zachary Gates had a two for three performance that included a home run and three RBIs. Jake Bauers, Dee Atwood and Patrick Poss also had hits.
The Cardinals improved their record to 4-3 while the Yankees fell to 6-2.
Yankees 1, A’s 0
A game that featured excellent pitching on both sides was decided by an unearned run.
Zachary Gates pitched his third complete-game shutout of the season. He limited the A’s to one hit while striking out 13. Max Gibbs and Grant Mayeaux of the A’s combined to hold the Yankees to two hits and recorded nine strikeouts.
Yankees 5, Giants 4
In a close game that went down to the final out, the Yankees held on to defeat the Giants.
Jake Schulze pitched four-plus solid innings for the Giants, giving up four runs before being relieved by closer Keith Fronk. The Yankees’ Dee Atwood allowed three runs in his five-inning stint before Jake Bauers pitched the final inning.
Getting multiple hits for the Giants were Fronk and Grant Peugh.
Yankees 2, Twins 0
Zachary Gates tossed a two-hitter while striking out 12 in a complete-game victory for the Yankees.
All the scoring occurred in the first two innings of the game. Jake Bauers led off the game for the Yankees with a single up the middle and later scored on a single by Gates. In the top of the second inning, Andrew Wall hit his second solo homerun of the season with a drive over the left field fence to make it 2-0.
Minor A Division
Twins 24, Orioles 7
The Twins hammered out 22 hits en route to an easy win.
Among the key hitters were Stuart Morton, who went five for five with two singles, two doubles and his fourth home run of the season; Daniel Amaral with a single and two doubles; JoJo Amaral had a double and two singles; and Jack Shearer, who singled three times.
Ben Vaught, Gavin Springer and Ben Roth each had two hits. Micah Bartle and Tyler Somerville had singles. And Alec Barbisan and Andrew DeLoach each scored a run.
