Vanguard vs. BiolaCOSTA MESA — The Lions improved to 18-12, 15-11 in the Golden State Conference after finishing a game from Feb. 17 with a win and then splitting a doubleheader Saturday.
Vanguard won the continued game, 8-3, but lost the opener of the doubleheader, 10-9. Tyson Leighton led the Lions with three hits and three RBIs in the loss. Zach Leighton went two for three with two RBIs and a run in Vanguard’s 5-0 win.

Vanguard 4, Biola 2Vanguard 4, Concordia 3COSTA MESA — Jen Olvera dominated in the first game and the No. 10-ranked Lions rallied in the nightcap to complete a Golden State Athletic Conference sweep of the No. 24-ranked Eagles Saturday.
Olvera also came in relief in the second game and picked up the win to improve to 12-1. Sarah Howe was two for three with three RBIs in the first game. Melissa Forrester’s triple in the eighth inning tied the game in the nightcap and Jen Rynda knocked in pinch runner Heather Durham on a single to win it.

Stanford InvitationalPALO ALTO — UC Irvine senior Rickey Barns qualified for the NCAA regional in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14 minutes, 9.45 seconds Saturday.
Barnes’ time, which placed fourth in the race, is the eighth-best in UCI history. He qualified for the NCAA regional in the 1,500 meters earlier this season.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Fresno State 7, UC Irvine 0FRESNO — The No. 31-ranked UC Irvine women’s tennis team (16-3) was shut out and saw its 11-match win streak snapped at No. 15 Fresno State in nonconference play on Saturday.
