ARTS COMMISSION WRAP-UP

The following is from the Feb. 12 meeting of the Laguna Beach Arts Commission.

Barber, Thornsley selected for public art

Finalists in both the 1900 Laguna Canyon Road Art in Public Places competition and the Crescent Bay Point Park sculpture competition were named; winning artists in both competitions are from Laguna Beach.

For the competition for seating and artistic elements at the future corporate yard and trolley stop, which elicited 25 entries, a single team comprised of local glass artist John Barber and sculptor Louis Longi of Pasadena was selected as the sole finalist.

Their piece features glass and bronze elements, including a “beacon” comprised of orange blown glass that would be visible from Laguna Canyon Road.

Terry Thornsley was named sole finalist for the Crescent Bay competition, for his concept that includes a sea lion and cormorant.

The artists will attend the commission’s Feb. 26 meeting to discuss their proposals.

Library bench to be dedicated

The “Another Beautiful Day in Paradise” bench in front of the public library will be dedicated at 5 p.m. before the March 1 Art Walk, which runs from 6 to 9 p.m.

A reception at the library will immediately follow the dedication.

The bench was created by Valerie Gorrell and Helma Bovenizer.
