THE LAST WORD:Extreme makeover: Osprey nest edition

Ah, the power of the osprey.

They are, after all, magnificent birds of prey, and apparently having a close encounter with them can turn hammer-and-sawtoting construction workers into virtual environmentalists.

Construction workers turned environmentalists? What next? NASCAR racers driving hybrids?

Well here’s how it happened. At first, workers constructing the Back Bay Science Center a year ago were upset to learn that a pair of the birds and their young family of hatchlings would put them out of work for a while.

The ospreys had built a nest on a pole on Shellmaker Island and moving the nest was an environmental no-no. That alone should have resulted in cries of environmental extremism gone wild.

But it didn’t take long for the workers to become attached to the osprey. Now, a year later, that same pole has been moved, and the osprey seem just fine with the relocation of their high-rise condo.

And the concerned construction workers should rest easy knowing their feathered friends are just fine as well.
