BERNHARD HONORED AGAIN

UC Irvine junior Becky Bernhard has been honored for the second straight time as the Big West Player of the Week after defeating San Diego State’s Eliska Krausova.

Bernhard, who has earned the conference honor five times in her career, is 5-1 in singles this season at the No. 1 position.

YOVAN GAINS RECOGNITION

UC Irvine senior Aaron Yovan has been named the Big West Player of the Week for the second straight week after beating Santa Clara’s Jan Macek, 7-6, 2-6, 11-9.

Yovan has won two of his three singles matches during the dual match season.

UCI’S TOM LAUDED

UC Irvine junior Randall Tom earned the Big West Athlete of the Week honor after helping the Anteaters win at Cal State Northridge and UC Davis.

Tom broke the school record in the 400-meter individual medley with a time of 3:55.03 against UC Davis. He also won the 200 butterfly at 1:48.32. Against Cal State Northridge, he won the 200 freestyle (1:43.01) and placed second in the 100 breaststroke (57.50).

DEFORD APPEARS LOCALLY

Frank Deford, a well-known writer for Sports Illustrated, an author and also correspondent for HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, will speak during the Martin W. Witte Distinguished Speakers Lecture Series on Friday and Saturday at the Newport Beach Public Library.

Deford, who has written 12 books, will also sign books Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets for Friday are $40 per person and include wine reception and live music. On Saturday, tickets are $25 per person.
