UC Irvine 4, Cal 3BERKELEY — The Anteaters scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the eighth to come from behind in their nonconference win in both teams’ season opener Friday.
Taylor Holiday led the way for UCI (1-0), going three for four at the plate, while pitcher Wes Etheridge, a junior transfer, picked up the win in his division debut.
In the eighth, senior Cody Cipriano, who was two for four with a home run, led off with a single. He advanced to second when pinch hitter Matt Morris’ sacrifice to third was mishandled by Cal’s Michael Brady. Both runners advanced on junior Bryan Petersen’s sacrifice hit and freshman Jeff Cusick grounded to second to bring in Cipriano to tie the game. Cal first baseman David Cooper committed the second error of the inning on catcher Aaron Lowenstein’s grounder, allowing Morris to score the eventual game-winning run.
Etheridge struck out one and allowed two hits in 2 2/3 scoreless innings for the win. Senior Blair Erickson set down two in a perfect ninth to record his 41st save of his career. Starter Scott Gorgen pitched five innings, striking out three while giving up three runs on six hits in the no-decision.
The series continues today at 1:00 p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Orange Coast 74, Fullerton 59COSTA MESA — Courtney Ford had 21 points and nine rebounds, helping Orange Coast, ranked No. 4 in Southern California, remain undefeated in conference on Friday night at OCC.
Brittany Taylor had 14 points, seven rebounds and four assists for the Pirates (23-3, 10-0 in conference). Marlene Oeurn had a team-high 11 points for No. 5 Fullerton (22-7, 7-3), which had only lost by four points in its previous meeting with OCC.

SWIMMING
UC Irvine men, women def.NORTHRIDGE — The UC Irvine men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each easily defeated Northridge on Friday, with the men winning, 144-61, and the women finishing on top, 135-68.
Cal State Northridge
The Anteater men each had top times in nine of 11 events. Eric Reilly and Eddie Erazo each won two solo events for UCI. Reilly won the 50-yard freestyle (20.95 seconds) and the 100 free (46.32), while Erazo won the 400 individual medley (four minutes, 10.14 seconds) and the 100 backstroke (51.18).
On the women’s side, UCI also won nine of 11 events, with Tanya Nielsen and Lindsay DePaul each won their three solo events to lead the ‘Eaters. Nielsen won the 200 free (1:56.52), the 50 free (24.75) and the 100 free (54.00). DePaul won the 400 IM (4:24.12), the 100 fly (58.06) and the 100 breast (1:06.78).
The Anteaters face UC Davis on the road Saturday.
WOMEN’S TENNIS
Vanguard 6, Claremont Mudd-Scripps 3CLAREMONT — Vanguard won four singles matches and two doubles matches, taking its nonleague season opener on Friday at Mudd-Scripps.
In singles, No. 2 player Betty Tesfa topped Mudd-Scripps’ Jessica Nagasako, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 3, the Lions’ Hana Jurcovicova beat Lisa Steckmest , 6-1, 6-3. Zuzana Zustakova beat Stephanie Hammond at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 1-0, ret., and Olivia Amstad won at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 over Jessica Fox.
Tesfa and Zustakova teamed up at No. 2 doubles to down Steckmest and Hammond, 8-5. Amstad and Damia Donkervoort were victorious at No. 3 doubles, 8-6, over Fox and Allison Laygo.
Vanguard (1-0) is at Concordia on Wednesday at 2 p.m.

Cal State San Bernardino 5,COSTA MESA — The Lions split a nonleague doubleheader to open their season on Saturday at Vanguard.
Vanguard 1 (Game 2)
In the first game, Jennifer Olvera went the distance for Vanguard (1-1), giving up three runs and striking out 11. Shortstop Rachel Bomgren was three for three with a double for the Lions, who jumped out to a 7-1 lead over the visiting Coyotes after two innings of play.
Designated hitter Melissa Forrester was two for two with three RBIs, and Olvera and third baseman Sarah Howe each scored twice.
In the second game, Vanguard scored in the first inning when Jennifer Bergh singled home Olvera. But San Bernardino scored a run in the third inning to tie, and four more in the fourth for the win in the six-inning game.
Howe and Noelle Navarette were both two for three for Vanguard in the second game.
The Lions play host to Claremont Mudd-Scripps today at 12 p.m.

Fullerton 89, Orange Coast 75COSTA MESA — The Pirates were outscored 51-27 in the second half in their Orange Empire Conference loss Friday at OCC.
Josh Poitevin had 22 points and five three-pointers off the bench for Orange Coast (13-13, 4-4 in conference), which shot just 26% in the second half (nine for 35) in losing a 10-point halftime lead. Miguel Gonzalez had 17 for the Pirates.
Rodrick Johnson had 34 points and 11 rebounds for Fullerton College (13-15, 4-5).
