GIRLS’ SOCCER

Costa Mesa 2, Laguna Beach 1COSTA MESA — Sophomore Kyra Graham scored two goals to lead the Mustangs to victory Thursday in a match for first place in the Orange Coast League.

Sophomores Ayla Medina and Brooke Urmson, who played all three midfield positions, each had assists.

“Brooke was all over the place; she had a brilliant game,” Mustangs Coach Dan Johnston said.

Johnston added that sophomores stopper Cheyenne Lopez and Kristina Roche had strong games.

“The entire team played well,” Johnston said.

Junior goalkeeper Katie Finn, who was a game-time decision, made four saves.

Sage Hill 4, Whitney 0NEWPORT COAST — In the final home game of the season for the Lightning, the seniors played for the entirety and defensive players and offensive players switched positions for the first half of the Academy League victory Thursday.

Sage Hill improved to 8-7-2, 5-2 in league.

Senior Ali McLaughlin played goalkeeper as well, giving freshman Hannah Macleod, who had a save, an opportunity to play offense and nearly picking up a goal. Lightning Coach Amy Ray said senior Rachel Haber nearly scored as well.

Freshman Jackie Dion, McLaughlin, junior Jules McLaughlin and Emily Webb each scored a goal. Freshman Jordan Team had two assists, while senior Emily Webb had one.

Irvine 3, Corona del Mar 0IRVINE — The Pacific Coast League loss Thursday eliminated the Sea Kings from playoff contention.

Freshman goalkeeper Corey Cano played 60 minutes and made six saves. Junior Meghan Low finished the game and made two saves. Corona del Mar Coach Bryan Middleton played all nine of his seniors for the final 20 minutes of the game.

The Corona del Mar freshman-sophomore and junior varsity teams were a combined 9-0-3 in league play.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sage Hill 34, Whitney 31NEWPORT COAST — On Senior Night, senior Kaitlin Tyre had eight points and hit two key late free throws, helping the Lightning seal the Academy League win on Thursday at Sage Hill.

Sophomore forward Stephanie Garrison had a team-high 11 points for Sage Hill (11-11, 6-2), which moved into first place a half-game ahead of Brethren Christian in the league standings. Brethren Christian did not play on Thursday. Sage Hill’s Tierney Danner added seven points and 12 rebounds.

Katie Indvik scored four goals and Sarah Hutchison added three in the first-round win, and Cari Levine paced the Sea Kings (17-5) with three goals in the second-round victory over Mira Costa.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division I, plays Whittier today at 6 p.m. at CdM in a quarterfinal game.
