Ocean View takes aim

A busy week for the Ocean View High boys’ basketball team continues Saturday when the Seahawks compete at the much-anticipated Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana.

The Seahawks, who will have played two Golden West League games this week, including a Friday matchup at Westminster, will take on JSerra in an 11:30 a.m. game that is part of an eight-game tournament schedule Saturday.

The key contest of the 24-game extravaganza is the Mater Dei-Lake Oswego (Oregon) showdown that will cap the two-day event at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.

Mater Dei senior forward Taylor King has signed with Duke. Lake Oswego senior center Kevin Love, whom some prep basketball experts consider the nation’s top recruit, will attend UCLA next year.

“It’s going to be a great day of basketball,” Ocean View co-head Coach Jimmy Harris said. “It’s a fun event to go to, but at the same time, it’s a challenge for our kids.

“The game against JSerra is a nice change from league play but it’s definitely a test for us. The kids will need to stay focused.”

Ocean View began the second-half of league play last Friday with an 81-56 win over visiting Segerstrom.

The Seahawks led 21-16 after the first quarter, reached their first double-digit lead of the game on a Steven Smith jumper in the second quarter and went on to outscore the Jaguars by 16 points in the quarter en route to a 49-28 halftime advantage.

Ocean View led by as many as 29 points in the second half.

Seahawks junior guard Takeshi Clifford led all scorers with 20 points. Senior guard Brandon Ishimoto finished with 12 points and Smith with 11.

Twelve Seahawks scored in the game.

“I thought it was a nice statement game for us,” Harris said. “We beat a talented but young Segerstrom team and scoring-wise, it was our best performance of the year, so far.

“The outcome was a product of us learning to play together. Things were in rhythm and that’s what happens when you play together.”

In Sunset League boys’ basketball on Monday, host Edison dropped a 72-57 decision to first-place Los Alamitos. Freshman guard Kyle Boswell led the Chargers with a game-high 21 points.

In a previous league outing, Corey Ferraro hit a three-point shot with less than a second remaining to elevate Edison 43-42 over host Newport Harbor.

In other Sunset League play, Marina suffered a 113-79 loss at Los Alamitos. The Vikings hit 15 three-point shots to push their state single-season record to 353.

The national record for three-pointers in a season is 382.

Senior guard Mike Kinoshita scored 19 points and junior guard Jimmy Irvin and freshman guard Brendan Holmes each scored 15 for Marina.

Huntington began the second-half of Sea View League play by surprising visiting Trabuco Hills, 58-51, to atone for a 67-49 loss to the Mustangs on the opening night of league play on Jan. 5.

Three Oilers scored in double figures: junior guard Nicholas Becker had a game-best 22 points, junior guard Trevor Carroll scored 15 points and sophomore guard Zachary Kimber 10 points.

Edison picked up its sixth Sunset League win in seven games by defeating host Los Alamitos Monday, 38-31. Senior guard Wahine Kepilino of the Chargers topped all scorers with 12 points.

Marina won its third-straight Sunset game with a 40-32 home court victory over Los Alamitos. Sophomore forward Rita Sitivi led the Vikings with 13 points and 15 rebounds.

On Tuesday, Jasmine Erving, fouled while grabbing a rebound off a missed shot by teammate Jena Klett, calmly dropped two free throws with four seconds left to lift visiting Huntington Beach to a 38-36 Sea View League win over Northwood.

Erving, who finished with a game-high 16 points, has been a nemesis to the Timberwolves this year: on Jan. 9, she sank a pair of free throws with 0.6 seconds left to give the Oilers a 51-50 win.

“Jas has been clutch for us all year,” Oilers Coach Russell McClurg said. “She beat them a month ago and she did it again the same way the second time around.

Sophomore guard Noelani Viloria added 12 points for the flu-ridden Oilers who can clinch a share of the league title with a win tonight over visiting El Toro.

Huntington previously had scored a convincing 60-22 league win over visiting Trabuco Hills on Senior Night. Fittingly, it was senior guard Andrea Ostrowski who scored the first two baskets of the game — both three-point shots — and the Oilers scored the first eight points of the game.

They also scored the first 20 points of the second half, capped by an NBA-range three-pointer by Ostrowski, that turned a 24-9 halftime lead into a blowout at 44-9.

It was the second-such rout of Trabuco Hills in league: on Jan. 4, Huntington scored a 71-24 win over the Mustangs.

Viloria led all scorers with 16 points and Ostrowski finished with a personal-best 15. Erving had six points to go along with eight rebounds.

Ocean View remained undefeated in Golden West League play and atop the league standings following a 49-35 win at Segerstrom.

Senior center DJ Butler scored a game-high 23 points and junior guard Kelsey Harris and senior forward Ashley Dunn each scored 10 for the Seahawks as the second-half of league play got underway.
