Candidates report funding totals

Newport-Mesa city council campaigns set new records in 2006, with some candidates raising and spending more than in any previous elections. Three candidates broke the $100,000 mark in spending — all ended as winners — while a residents group in Newport Beach spent more than twice that on a losing ballot measure.
Campaign finance reports that covered all money raised and spent in 2006 were due Wednesday. Some highlights of the reports are listed below. Not all candidates’ reports were available at press time, and money candidates raised and spent in 2005 toward the November election is not included in the 2006 totals.
