WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Orange Coast 78,

COSTA MESA — Led by Courtney Ford’s 18 points and nine rebounds, the Pirates finished third place in their eight-team Coast Christmas Classic tournament Wednesday.

Christina Calcagno contributed 14 points and Brittany Taylor added 11 points for the Pirates, who improved to 12-3. Orange Coast forced 38 turnovers, 24 in the first half, when the Pirates built a 40-25 lead.

Karla Medina and Nicole Anderson scored 22 points each to lead Southwestern (4-9). Ford and Rachel Maulit, who scored seven points Wednesday, were named to the all-tournament team.

Leslie Ortiz, who scored 49 points in the tournament and led CoC to a 76-69 win over Cerritos in the title game, was named the tourney’s Most Valuable Player.

SANTA BARBARA — Dennis Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, led the Lions with 18 points in the nonconference loss Tuesday.

Brandon Henderson finished with nine points for Vanguard (2-8), which plays in the NAIA. Heenan hit four of seven from three-point range.

Chris Devine led the Gauchos (8-2), who play in the NCAA’s Big West Conference, with 22 points.
