HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP:El Toro shuts out Corona del Mar girls’ soccer, 4-0

El Toro 4, Corona del Mar 0LAKE FOREST — El Toro scored four goals in the second half to win the nonleague match over the Sea Kings Tuesday.

Corona del Mar High Coach Bryan Middleton said senior Stephanie Brown and sophomore Cosette Andujur had scoring opportunities in the second half that narrowly missed. Middleton added that senior Ali Torres played strong defense for the Sea Kings (2-5-4). “We’re still trying to gel,” Middleton said.

Newport Harbor 2, El Modena 2ORANGE — Gillan Hogan and Alexis Conley each scored goals for the Sailors.

Newport Harbor (4-3-1) led 2-0 after Conley’s goal in the 60th minute, but couldn’t hang on for the victory. Goalkeeper Mary Giberson made seven saves.

WRESTLINGNewport Harbor 44, Huntington Beach 30HUNTINGTON BEACH — Eddie Garcia and Cameron Rausch helped the Sailors as did seven other wrestlers beat Huntington Beach for the first time in Newport Harbor Coach Dominic Bulone’s eight years.

“A tremendous win for our guys,” said Bulone, whose team improved to 7-4. “It was impressive because Eddie beat their top 112-pounder, Dustin Burdette, by decision, and Rausch stepped in as a sophomore for our injured starter and beat their top 215-pounder, Bryan Bennett.”

Other Newport Harbor winners include Nick Bernstein (119 pounds), David Garcia (130), Josh George (135), Michael Perrotta (140), Adrian Luchs (171), Bruce Hartshorn (189) and Brian Beaudette (heavyweight). The Sailors wrestle at Corona del Mar Thursday at 6 p.m.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Hawthorne 63, Newport Harbor 61NEWPORT BEACH — Kyle Caldwell scored 23 points, and Weston Dunlap added 23 points, but Caldwell’s three-pointer late for the win missed and Dunlap couldn’t tie the game up for the Sailors with his last-second putback attempt in overtime.

The Sailors play at Woodbridge on Thursday at 7 p.m.
