ALL-CIF BOYS’ WATER POLO:McClain, Jorth, Berry earn first-team honors

Local high school boys water polo players who helped their teams to league titles also received recognition in the postseason.

Newport Harbor High senior Bryce McLain, junior Clinton Jorth and Corona del Mar senior Michael Berry were recently named to the All-CIF Southern Section Division I first team.

McLain, who was also named Co-MVP of the Sunset League, recorded 164 saves, averaging nearly seven per game. He was one of three goalies on the first team.

Jorth, the 6-foot driver, scored 61 goals, helping lead Newport Harbor to the semifinals of the CIF Division I playoffs, as well as a Sunset League title.

The Sailors also reached the semifinals of the inaugural CIF Masters Tournament.

Berry, the MVP of the Pacific Coast League, led the Sea Kings to the quarterfinals of the Division I playoffs. He scored a team-high 80 goals and also had 29 steals for Corona del Mar, the PCL champion.

The Sailors’ Brandon Parole, a junior, and senior Blake Hockenbury, as well as CdM senior Ryan Kent received second team honors.

Hockenbury scored 53 goals and Parole had 34 for the Sailors. Kent, also a PCL first-teamer, amassed 16 assists, which was second for Corona del Mar.

Newport Harbor junior Collin Sherman and Corona del Mar senior Ryan Hultman were on the third team.

Sherman scored 30 goals for the Sailors.

Ryan Hultman, who also earned first-team All-PCL honors, led the Sea Kings with 29 assists and was second on the team with 45 goals.
