COLLEGE ROUNDUP:UC Irvine can’t maintain big lead in road loss

DES MOINES, Iowa — The UC Irvine men’s basketball team let an 18-point lead slip away, leading to a 76-73 nonconference loss to Drake Tuesday in Des Moines.

Forward Adam Templeton led the Anteaters with 19 points on seven-of-11 shooting, including a game-high five three-pointers. But his final three-point shot attempt fell short at the buzzer, just 12 seconds after Drake’s Al Stewart missed two free throws.

The Bulldogs (6-2), who won their fifth straight, held the ‘Eaters scoreless for nearly seven minutes late in the game and capitalized on 15 second-half turnovers by UCI.

Guard Chuma Awaji scored 13 points, connecting on four of his seven attempts from the field for UC Irvine, which committed 22 turnovers to 13 for Drake.

UCI freshman Michael Hunter came off the bench to score 13 points and dish out a team-high four assists.

Drake (6-2) notched 18 steals and outscored the Anteaters (3-6) by 15 points in the second half.

UC Irvine connected on 14 of 26 three-pointers for the game.
