COMMUNITY & CLUBS:Support Costa Mesa’s adopted troop
- Share via
While Newport Beach has been getting most of the press for adopting the U.S. Marines’ 1st Battalion of the 1st Regiment, Costa Mesa on Sept. 6 adopted the Delta Company, 2-25th Aviation Regiment (Task Force Diamond Head) of the U.S. Army, which is mobilized in Iraq. D Company’s mission is to provide maintenance, inspection and procurement support to the Army’s Blackhawk helicopters. Costa Mesa officials encourage residents, businesses, nonprofits, schools, service clubs, veterans, faith-based and scouting organizations to support D Company.
There are several ways to get involved. Sending letters and photos provide soldiers with a sense of home while they are away. Go to www.ci.costa-mesa.ca.us and click on the D Company link for name, rank and task assignments of soldiers or contact the city manager’s office and ask for a “D Company Information Packet.”
SERVING THE COMMUNITY FOR THE HOLIDAYS
The Harbor Mesa Lions Club is assisting the Boys & Girls Club of the Westside with its annual shopping day Dec. 16. The club is donating gifts and assisting the children with gift wrapping. The Lions Club is also helping three families in Costa Mesa by donating gift items and food to fulfill their “wish lists.”
The Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club donated $900 to the effort by City Councilwoman Katrina Foley and the city to provide gifts to military families of D Company. The proceeds are from the September barbecue put on by the club at the Model Engineers Railroad meet, said member Mike Scheafer. An $800 donation was made to the Harbor Area Boys & Girls Club for toys for the Westside Boys & Girls Club Branch annual Christmas party. The proceeds are from the barbecue held at the railroad meet on Nov. 18 and 19. The project is a joint effort of the Kiwanis Club and the Lions.
