Locals find silver lining

Four victories in five games earned the Laguna Beach High boys’ basketball team the Silver Bracket championship last week at the Cerritos-Gahr Tournament.

The Breakers bounced back from a tournament-opening loss to St. John Bosco to win its final four games to earn the bracket title.

In a 71-57 loss to the Braves, Cheyne Martin scored 24 points and Brian Delino had 13. The Breakers then began their four-game win streak with a 50-28 romp past Long Beach Millikan. Martin netted 25 points and Marcus Hairston nine points in the win.

Next came a 79-65 win over Animo of Inglewood, with Martin producing 35 points to go along with 12 rebounds and four assists. Delino scored 10 points and Ryan Lawler hauled in 10 rebounds.

The Breakers needed overtime to get past Downey, 62-59. Martin again posted 35 points, Lawler scored 10 and Bob Monroe had eight rebounds. Laguna capped the tournament with a 62-50 win over Cabrillo of Long Beach.

Martin scored 30 points and had five rebounds and five assists, Monroe had seven points and nine rebounds and Lawler scored eight points.

Martin and Delino were named to the all-tournament team.

“The competition level in the tournament was very high, so we had some good wins,” Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said.

Laguna opens its home slate today at 7 p.m. against Sage Hill.

In girls’ action:

Laguna dropped its first two games of the 2006-07 season, falling on the road to Whitney of Cerritos and Beckman.

The Breakers could only muster 10 points in their opener, a 70-10 loss to Whitney. Katie Daff scored six of Laguna’s 10 points. On Monday, the Breakers lost to Beckman, 53-31.

Brittney Clark scored 13 points to go along with seven rebounds, eight steals and three assists, Daff scored 10 points and had five rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists and Dana Weaver finished with five points and 11 rebounds.

Laguna opens play Tuesday in the Segerstrom Tournament.
