COLLEGE ROUNDUP:Vanguard men fall to Cal Baptist
COSTA MESA — Greg Gusiff and Dennis Heenan scored 12 points each, but the Vanguard University men’s basketball team lost, 72-56, to Cal Baptist in its Golden State Athletic Conference opener at home Tuesday.
The Lions, who only shot 34.6% from the field, dropped to 1-5, 0-1 in conference.
Vanguard scored the game’s first basket, but wouldn’t score again for seven minutes. Ahead, 8-2, the Lancers went on an 18-6 run for a 26-8 lead with 5:22 left.
Vanguard cut the lead to 30-21 at halftime, but Cal Baptist came back with a three-pointer and stretched the lead to 13 a minute into the second half.
Gusiff hit two three-pointers to cut the lead to seven, but once again the Lancers scored five straight.
