PEEK AT THE WEEK:A good time for thanks

This week will be known for Thanksgiving and a few high schools, namely Corona del Mar, won’t hold back about being gracious.
That’s because the Sea Kings are one of the schools that has fall sports teams still competing in the postseason. Out of the five schools in the Newport-Mesa area, CdM possesses the most teams still playing, including football, girls’ volleyball, girls’ tennis, boys’ cross country and the three-time CIF Southern Section Division III champion that is girls’ cross country.
Coach Bill Sumner’s girls will attempt to successfully defend their state title Saturday at the CIF final meet at Woodward Park in Fresno, where the CdM boys, Newport Harbor girls, Sage Hill School girls and Sage Hill’s Connor Rose will also be competing.
The Sea Kings girls’ tennis team will be going up against Troy in the CIF Southern Section Division I title match today at 10 a.m. at the Claremont Club. At 1:30 p.m., the Sage Hill girls will vie for the Division IV championship against Valencia of Placentia.
CdM’s girls’ volleyball team will be in Visalia Tuesday to play Redwood for its first-round Southern California regional game in the CIF Division III State Tournament.
The Sea Kings football team will face Cypress at Western High Friday at 7:30 p.m.

College women’s cross country, UC Irvine’s Laura Olvera at NCAA Championships at Terra Haute, Indiana, 11 a.m. today: Olvera, a sophomore who has been the Big West Conference runner-up the past two years, is the first UCI runner to advance to the NCAA Championships since Kareen Nilsson competed at the nationals in 2000.
Community college women’s basketball, Citrus at Orange Coast, 3 p.m. Tuesday: Coach Mike Thornton’s Pirates will try to get the victory over the Owls in their home opener.
