CIF playoffs
Newport Harbor High will face El Toro (26-4) in a CIF Southern Section Division I semifinal at William Woollett Jr. Aquatics Center Friday tonight at 7 p.m. The aquatics center is next to Irvine High.
The Sailors are one win away from playing in the championship for the second straight year. They lost last year to Long Beach Wilson in the title game. Newport Harbor avenged that loss to the Bruins in this season’s first round, 17-2.
In the quarterfinals Tuesday, the Tars earned an emotional 8-7 win over Back Bay rival Corona del Mar that ended in the second sudden death overtime.
Clinton Jorth passed up a potential game-winning shot and gave the ball up to Riley Hayes who scored to lead Newport Harbor to the victory.
The Sailors (24-5) lost to El Toro, 8-4, on Sept. 23 in the semifinals of the South Coast Tournament.
