Regents to vote on UCI law school
The University of California regents are set to vote on UC Irvine’s bid for a law school at their meeting this week, as UCI continues to pursue a dream that began nearly two decades ago.
On Tuesday, the regents’ committee on educational policy is set to take action on the law school proposal and forward it to the committee of the whole the next day. Both meetings are to be held on the UCLA campus.
UCI first formed a law school task force in the late 1980s and weathered a series of unsuccessful attempts to establish a school on campus. In September of this year, the campus withdrew its proposal from the agenda of the California Postsecondary Education Commission, an advisory group. Nevertheless, Chancellor Michael Drake presented the proposal to the Regents later that month.
UCI’s proposed law school would enroll 600 students, with an emphasis on public careers. If the latest proposal succeeds, UCI hopes to admit its first class in 2009.
